Peru’s Archaeological Marvels and Cultural Expeditions.

09-Day/08-Night small group tour to Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley of the Incas, Puno & Lake Titicaca.

DAY 1 | Lima | 27th Sept, Fri

Arrive at Lima Airport. A transportation service and a guide will pick you up from the airport at the scheduled time to transfer you to your hotel in Lima. The Peruvian capital is a modern metropolis full of history, currently undergoing an exciting process of cultural and economic changes.

Explore Lima’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, packed with fascinating historic buildings. The route begins at the Casa Aliaga, a colonial mansion granted by chief conquistador Francisco Pizarro to one of his captains, Jeronimo de Aliaga. This is the only house from that time, still belonging to the same family. Continue with a scenic tour through the colonial downtown. See the Main Square, where you can appreciate the grandiose architecture of the Spanish Empire. Admire Lima’s Cathedral, built during the 16th century.

Then, we will head towards the traditional Pueblo Libre district, where you visit the Larco Museum, located in a beautifully restored viceregal mansion built on a pre-Columbian pyramid from the seventh century. The museum boasts a complete pre-Hispanic collection of gold and silver objects, as well as pieces of erotic art.

Dinner included at Café del Museo Larco. Return to the hotel after dinner.

  • Meals included: Dinner.

DAY 2 | Lima – Cusco | 28th Sept, Sat

Enjoy a pleasant transfer from the selected hotel to the airport. A representative will assist you along the way.

Suggested Flight Lima/Cusco. LATAM2017 08:45/10:10

Enjoy a comfortable transfer from Cusco Airport to your hotel. A representative will meet and greet you, and then transfer you to the selected hotel in Cusco.

You will start the tour at the Sacsayhuamán fortress, one of the emblematic Inca constructions (located a few minutes away from the built-up area), built by Inca Pachacútec in the 15th century. It is a huge fortress made of very large stones, and the manner in which they were transported, and cut is still a mystery. The Inti Raymi Festival, which worships the Sun, is reenacted on June 24 of each year, during the winter solstice.

You will then go to Qenqo, located four kilometers away from Cusco city, which is a mainly religious archaeological complex where it is believed that propitiatory agricultural rituals were carried out. You will continue to Puka Pukara, located seven kilometers away from Cusco. Puka Pukara, which means red fortress, was an architectural complex presumably used for military purposes; it has many rooms, squares, bathrooms, aqueducts, walls and towers, and it is believed that the Incas entourage used it while he rested at Tambomachay. Next, you will explore the fountains of Tambomachay, a construction that has fine stone finishings and high command of hydraulic engineering, with aqueducts that continue supplying clear water to this place. This archaeological complex is located eight kilometers away from Cusco City. Also known as the Inca Bath, Tambomachay was probably the leisure place for the Inca and his entourage. The construction seems to have a special interest in water, which it worshipped, and fine aqueducts fed on groundwater aquifers and neighboring hot springs. Return to the hotel.

  • Meals included: Breakfast

DAY 3 | Cusco – Sacred Valley | 29th Sept, Sun

During the morning, you are picked up from your hotel in Cusco to visit the town of Chinchero, a traditional Cusco urban centre located at an elevated point with a beautiful view of the valley. The inhabitants of this area preserve the artisan traditions and the inherited knowledge of the Incas and display them in their clothes and customs. Chinchero also has archaeological remains and a beautiful seventeenth-century church, one of the first Catholic buildings in Peru.

Then, you are transferred to the Living Museum of Yucay, a centre Andean traditions interpretation, where demonstrations of the elaboration of textile work, adobe, pottery and silverware are carried out in the same way in which they used to in antiquity, an original recreation of Inca traditions. Also, residents of the museum include llamas, sheep and alpacas, and they can be fed! Then, free time for lunch in a selected restaurant in the town of Ollantaytambo and, on the way to the fortress, witness the Andean essence breathed in the place, which still maintains Inca urban planning and has been inhabited since then. Go up the iconic steps of the iconic enclosure, built next to the mountain. You are transferred back to your hotel at the end of this activity.

*On Sundays, also visit the local market.

Enjoy a delicious lunch at Tunupa restaurant.

  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch

DAY 5 | Cusco – South Valley – Cusco | 1st Oct, Tue

Start your journey in Tipón, a perfectly preserved archaeological site, located 27 kilometres from the city of Cusco. Near the village of the same name, where an impressive rural colony mansion stands (1650), there are 12 terraces still cultivated, some enclosures and an irrigation system considered a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering, still used by the surrounding population.

Then continue to Pikillacta, corresponding to the Wari culture, considered one of the best-preserved pre-Inca cities of Peru. Among its 700 structures, covering more than 3 thousand hectares, there are stone and mud buildings of two and three floors, distinct terrace work and the head of a condor carved in a rock. It is estimated that 10,000 people lived in this city, whose streets can still be transited. Finally, visit Andahuaylillas, a town located 40 kilometres from Cusco that has the Church of Andahuaylillas as its main attraction. Also called The Sistine Chapel of America; due to the impressive quality of the art pieces found in it, the structure was built in the sixteenth century on sites of possibly Wari territory. Today it has an original pipe organ recently restored. From here start your return to Cusco.

The Uros are an indigenous people of Peru that live on a series of human-made islands, created entirely from the buoyant totora reeds that grow abundantly in the shallows of the lake. The islands are composed of layers of woven totora, which are regularly replenished from the top as they rot from the bottom. The Uros people also use reeds to construct their homes, so cooking is done outdoors to avoid possible fires! After visiting this fascinating island, sail to Taquile, a small slice of heaven that once belonged to the Inca Empire. Look around and notice traces of its Incan past in the ruins that still exist around the island. After a brief introduction, the local community will give you an insight into their customs and traditions with a cultural demonstration. Lunch is enjoyed on the island before the return trip to Puno.
